Hi. I'm James Canaves and I serve as Math Teacher, Program Chair, and Data Specialist. It is my 1st year at HSET and my 15th year of teaching in the Bronx. I am proud to be a product of the New York City Public School System. Outside of work, I love running, travelling to warmer places, and listening to indie rock
I am a native of the Bronx, and spent a lot of time with my family in the Belmont section on Arthur Ave.
I went to Sacred Heart Private and Mount St. Michael Academy both in this borough, and then off to Flushing for my college studies.Where I majored in Italian studies and education ---- then moved on to Social Studies and education for my grad studies.
My name is Michael DiBiasi and I am a Social Studies teacher at the High School for Energy and Technology in the Bronx. I received my bachelor’s degree at Rider University majoring in History and Secondary Education. I am currently finishing up my Master’s at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the summer majoring in American Foreign Policy. I have a New Jersey and New York state teaching certification, and this is my first full year here in the Bronx. I’m an avid basketball player and sports fanatic during my dwindling free time.
As a younger person (lol - ok you can stop laughing now), I was encouraged by a community of educators who also happened to be my neighbors and friends. It's because of them that I am a life-long learner, solve problems for myself, and rise above life's challenges. I have a huge debt to pay on behalf of those that cared for & gave me a strong academic foundation; I hope my students know I care for them the same and more.
Mrs. Filpo was born in the Dominican Republic and came to this country twenty years ago. She received a BA from City College of New York and a M.S from Hunter College. Mrs. Filpo's Teaching Philosophy is: "As a Spanish teacher believe that the role of a teacher as an educator is to achieve and maintain the student’s interest for the language. Being a teacher does not only mean to stand in front of a classroom full of students and dictate a lesson on what they need to learn. Being an educator means capturing the students’ attention so that they can listen to what I am teaching, which will be the only way they will learn the language.
I teach Algebra at HSET. I graduated from the University of the West Indies with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography and Geology and a Diploma in Teacher Education specializing in Mathematics and Geography. I also hold a Masters of Science from Touro College.

I am a Physical Education and health teacher for HSET. I graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a degree in Human Performance/Teaching and from Lehman College with a Masters in Health Education. Before HEST I taught at Roosevelt Campus for 12 years and Jane Adams for one year. All together I have been teaching for 16 years. I coach varsity baseball at Roosevelt Campus in the Bronx, Stamford CT for various ages and Greenwich American Legion for 16 year olds.
I teach physical education and this is my third year at HSET and I am excited to continue working with the students and the community to build a successful school. I received my bachelor's degree from Manhattan College and my Master's Degree from Manhattanville College. My lifelong passion for sports has led me to my career in physical education. I enjoy teaching my students about new and exciting games and activities they may not otherwise be exposed to outside my gymnasium. I coach soccer, basketball and lacrosse outside of the city. I hope to pass along my love for sports and fitness to my students!
